Sitar Tuning and Tablature
Tuning your sitar
For beginners, tuning a sitar is a daunting and laborious task.
There are 18 strings in total, and they can go out of tune very easily. The pegs are very delicate, and can de-tune at the slightest knock. The most delicate care is therefore required.
Tuning should be done by turning pegs on the neck of the sitar - for the main playing string, fine-tuning is done using a swan by the bridge. Pushing the swan down the sitar increases the pitch, and pushing it up decreases the pitch.
re-tuning should be done at least once daily, because the strings naturally de-tune throughout the day. Typically only the first string will be played, although many sitarists strum the main strings in unison.
The sympathetic strings are designed to resonate with main strings. they are not played.
The sitar is best tuned to c major - this means that an open strum should produce a C3 chord.

Tablature
Tablature is a symbol notation system made for guitars. SitarTabs uses standard symbols:
s=slide
st=strum
h=hammer on
p=pull off
hp=hammer on-pull off
db=down bend
ub=up bend
Numbers denote the frets.
